So you finally decided to book the boudoir shoot.
And now you’re standing in your closet thinking…
What the hell am I supposed to wear?
This is one of the most common questions I get from women before their boudoir sessions at my Scottsdale studio, and here’s the first thing I want you to know:
You do not need to go spend hundreds of dollars on lingerie to look incredible in your boudoir photos.
In fact, some of my favorite images aren’t photographed in traditional lingerie at all.
The goal isn’t to find the “perfect” outfit.
The goal is to choose pieces that make you feel like you — just maybe a slightly hotter version of you.
Let’s talk about what photographs beautifully, what you might already have in your closet, and how we decide what you’re actually going to wear during your boudoir session.
Absolutely not.
If you’ve been looking at boudoir photos online, you might feel like you need to show up with an entire suitcase full of expensive lingerie.
You don’t.
Yes, a beautiful bodysuit or lingerie set can photograph incredibly well. But so can a white button-down shirt. Jeans. A tank top. An oversized sweater. A sheet.
Sometimes the simplest outfits create the sexiest photographs.
Think less about what you believe you’re supposed to wear for boudoir and more about how you want to feel when you see your photographs.
Sexy?
Powerful?
Soft?
Romantic?
Edgy?
Playful?
Completely unlike the version of yourself who answers emails, drives carpool and unloads the dishwasher?
That’s where we start.
If you’re nervous about choosing lingerie, start with a bodysuit.
They’re flattering, incredibly versatile and photograph beautifully on so many different body types.
They can be feminine and romantic, dark and sexy, simple and classic, or completely dramatic depending on the style.
They’re also a great option if you want a little more coverage around your stomach while still showing off your shape.
And no, you don’t need to wait until you’ve lost five pounds to wear one.
I promise.
You really can’t go wrong with a beautiful matching lingerie set.
Black is timeless.
White can feel soft, bridal and feminine.
Jewel tones can look rich and dramatic.
Bright colors can be fun and completely unexpected.
But here’s my biggest piece of advice:
Fit matters more than the size on the tag.
Please don’t buy something two sizes too small because you think squeezing yourself into a smaller number somehow makes your body look smaller.
It doesn’t.
Choose something that fits your body comfortably and allows you to move.
Your lingerie is supposed to work for your body — not the other way around.
One of my favorite things to tell clients is to look beyond the lingerie drawer.
Do you have a great pair of jeans?
Bring them.
A fitted tank?
Yep.
An oversized white button-down?
Absolutely.
A leather jacket?
Now we’re talking.
A cozy sweater that falls perfectly off one shoulder?
Bring it.
Your husband’s dress shirt?
That can be incredibly sexy.
Boudoir doesn’t have to mean head-to-toe lace.
Sometimes an outfit that reveals less actually creates a much sexier photograph.
Then don’t.
Seriously.
There is no rule that says a boudoir photoshoot requires lingerie.
Your session should reflect your comfort level and your personality.
We can create beautiful, sensual photographs using clothing you already feel comfortable wearing.
And if, once you’re in the studio and feeling amazing, you decide you want to push outside your comfort zone a little more?
We can do that too.
You are always in control of how much or how little you want to show.
I hear this one all the time.
And my answer might surprise you.
Your outfit isn’t responsible for making your body look good. I am.
That’s where professional posing, lighting, camera angles and experience come in.
You don’t need to hide every part of yourself you feel insecure about.
My job as your boudoir photographer is to understand how to pose your body in a way that photographs beautifully — and I will guide you through that process from beginning to end.
You do not need to walk into my Scottsdale boudoir studio knowing how to pose.
That’s my job.
That said, if having a little more coverage helps you relax at the beginning of your session, bodysuits, high-waisted pieces, robes and oversized shirts are fantastic options.
We can start there.
You may be surprised by what you’re comfortable wearing by the end of your shoot.
There isn’t one “best” color.
Black is classic and dramatic.
White and cream can feel soft and romantic.
Deep jewel tones photograph beautifully and can add richness to your images.
Neutrals can create a timeless, editorial look.
But I would rather photograph you in a color that makes you feel incredible than put you in something simply because someone on the internet said it’s the “best boudoir color.”
Bring options.
We’ll figure it out together.
If you love heels, absolutely.
They can completely change your posture, elongate your legs and add another element to an outfit.
But heels aren’t mandatory either.
Some images look incredible barefoot.
And depending on the set, outfit and overall feel we’re creating, we may use them for five minutes and then toss them across the room.
Bring them if you have them.
We’ll decide what works once you’re here.
This is where your session can become uniquely yours.
Maybe it’s your husband’s favorite shirt.
Your wedding veil.
A piece of jewelry that means something to you.
A jersey.
A jacket.
Something from an important chapter of your life.
Or something that makes absolutely no sense to anyone else but makes you feel incredible.
Your boudoir photos don’t have to look like everyone else’s.
Actually, I’d rather they didn’t.
My biggest recommendation is to avoid buying something simply because you think it’s what you’re “supposed” to wear.
If you put something on at home and immediately start pulling at it, adjusting it or criticizing your body…
Don’t bring it.
The outfit isn’t doing its job.
I’d also avoid anything painfully tight or uncomfortable that restricts your movement. Boudoir posing involves much more movement than most women expect.
And don’t feel like every outfit needs to be complicated.
Simple photographs beautifully.
Bring options.
You don’t need to perfectly plan every look before arriving at the studio.
I would much rather have several pieces to choose from so we can look at everything together and decide what will photograph best.
Think of it like bringing possibilities instead of bringing a strict wardrobe plan.
Once I see the pieces, we can pair things together, decide which looks work best with different areas of the studio, and create variety throughout your gallery.
Good.
You don’t need to.
That’s part of why you hire a professional boudoir photographer.
You don’t need to know which outfit will photograph best.
You don’t need to know where to put your hands.
You don’t need to know how to arch your back.
You don’t need to practice facial expressions in your bathroom mirror.
And you definitely don’t need to become “more confident” before you book.
I will help you through all of it.
Your only job is to show up.
There isn’t a perfect boudoir outfit.
There isn’t a perfect body for boudoir either.
I’ve photographed women in beautiful lingerie and women wrapped in nothing but a sheet.
I’ve photographed women celebrating milestones, relationships, birthdays and major life changes.
And I’ve photographed plenty of women who didn’t have a reason at all beyond:
I wanted to do this for myself.
Those might be my favorite.
Because ultimately, boudoir isn’t about the lingerie.
It’s about the woman wearing it.
If you’ve been waiting until you lose weight…
Waiting until you feel more confident…
Waiting until you find the perfect lingerie…
Or just waiting for some imaginary “right time” to finally do this…
This is your sign to stop waiting.
You don’t need the perfect body.
You don’t need modeling experience.
And you definitely don’t need a drawer full of expensive lingerie.
You just need to show up.
I’ll take care of the rest.

Ready to see yourself differently?
Let’s plan your boudoir experience.
No. Boudoir sessions can include lingerie, bodysuits, jeans, oversized shirts, sweaters, sheets or other clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
There isn’t one outfit that is most flattering for every woman. Proper fit, professional posing, lighting and camera angles are far more important than choosing one particular style of lingerie.
Bodysuits, high-waisted lingerie, robes and oversized shirts can provide additional coverage. Your photographer can also use posing and lighting to create flattering images without requiring you to hide your body.
Absolutely. An oversized button-down, T-shirt, jersey or other meaningful item can make your boudoir photos more personal.
No. Heels can work beautifully with certain outfits and poses, but many boudoir photographs are taken barefoot.
Not necessarily. You may already own pieces that will photograph beautifully. Bring several options and your photographer can help you choose what works best for your session.
